Lhasa Apso Puppies 101: Learn the Basics of Caring for One of the Most Adorable toy Dogs

The Lhasa Apso breed is considered by many as a good luck dog. This is because this breed is a favorite of monks in Tibet, the same place where it originated.

Lhasa Apso puppies were given to people who visited the monks in the mountains and good luck spells and charms were chanted to bid them goodbye and good luck.

Now, Lhasa Apso dogs are one of the most adored toy dogs of all times all throughout the world. Caring for them might be a little challenging but with proper information, you should be good to go.

General Health

Dogs will be susceptible to health problems if not taken care of. These problems may be due to genetics, trauma, malnutrition, abnormalities, poisoning, and so on.

Common health problems may occur in the eyes, joints, bones, heart and respiratory systems, and immune systems. There are genetic diseases that may not be helped but at least you can reduce the possibility of these diseases from showing if preventive measures are taken.

Lhasa Apso puppies need vaccination to prevent most, if not all, diseases. Your veterinarian should know what standard vaccinations should be given specifically to this breed.

Although the Lhasa Apso can live up to 12 years, you can actually prolong this to 14 or 15 years if you ensure that you do everything not compromise your dog’s health and well-being.

General Care

Although Lhasa Apso puppies have not yet fully grown their coats, it is imperative that you develop the grooming habit and ritual as early as possible. To care for the puppies, you need to have a daily brushing regimen with them so you can spot the tangled hair and remove them right away.

This will also ensure that the puppies have enough bonding time with their master. This will help build leadership and obedience and will let the puppies know that grooming is going to be a part of their lives.

Make sure that you take your Lhasa Apso dogs to regular check up sessions with the veterinarian. This breed is prone to eye infections because of the hair that covers the eyes.

Skin infections are also likely to develop if the condition is humid and if the owner fails to provide general medical care for the coat such as anti-flea powders.

Your veterinarian will give you sound advice regarding the vaccinations that your dogs need. You will also receive great advice as to the brands of the shampoos that you can use.

General Training

Lhasa Apso puppies are very vibrant and inquisitive. They are very active and fun to be with. This is why you might find it challenging to train these puppies. They are small and are very playful but with the right approach or technique in training them, you should be able to succeed.

Just like any dog, training is very important as early as possible so you can prevent the puppies from developing unwanted behavior.

One tip when training the Lhasa Apso breed is that you need to prioritize the housebreaking and potty training over the other trainings. The dog belongs to the toy dog category and may show the same symptoms of sneaking.

Small dogs are known to sneak in hidden areas and pee or eliminate there.

It takes a long time to potty train dogs so patience is required. Training the puppies where to eliminate is a necessity that you will not be sorry for doing. You may also simultaneously potty train and housebreak your puppy.

After this, training the puppy of basic commands such as sitting, heeling, and staying should not be a big problem.
